A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
