Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
